Conjugate Letters (JuktAkhYara)

Conjugate letters are formed when two letters are joined together to form another letter that is a distinguished letter from the basic two letters, but the shapes of the two letters are conserved in the new letter to some percent.

Conjugate letters are formed with consonants, not vowels. There are 73 conjugate letters that are constructed using two letters. There are 42 conjugate letters that are constructed using 3 and 4 letters.

For our understanding we would divide conjugate letters according to the rule of their formation. The first letter will be called "primary" letter. The second letter will be called "secondary" letter and the third and fourth letters will be called "supporting" letters.

For example if "ta+pa" make "tpa", then "ta" is the primary letter, "pa" is the secondary letter although contribution wise "ta" will appear as a symbol below "pa" making "pa" more distinct.

Some of the conjugate letters are designed following similar principles. Some examples are "any letter + ka" would have the lowest portion of "ka" under the primary letter such as "sa+ka = ska" and "la+ka = lka".

So in reality, some of the styles in the design of conjugate letters make the task of learning conjugate letters easier.

In April we will learn about 30 conjugate letters.
